About the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) Examination
This examination can be used as a window to an entire career or as a stepping stone into management positions where an entire organization is examined from an operational, regulatory, financial and information technology perspective. The CIA exam tests similar topics to those on the Certified Management Accountant (CMA), as it is the CIAs as well as the CPAs who audit the CMAs.
The CIA examination consists of four parts that are discussed below:
Part 1, Internal Audit Role in Governance, Risk and Control is a 2 hour and 45 minute examination consisting of 100 multiple choice questions covering the following topics:
The International Professional Practices Framework (Internal Audit Standards), The Role of the Chief Audit Executive, Risk and Governance, Situational Operational and Financial Environment Problem Solving, Planning, Fraud and Code of Ethics.
Part 2, Conducting the Internal Audit Engagement is a 2 hour and 45 minute examination consisting of 100 multiple choice questions covering the following topics:
Analyzing Audit Information, Monitoring Audits, Compliance Auditing, an Introduction to Information Technology’s Role in Internal Audit regarding Security and Electronic Commerce, Audit Sampling, Interviews, Fraud and Code of Ethics.
Part 3, Business Analysis and Information Technology is a 2 hour and 45 minute examination consisting of 100 multiple choice questions covering the following topics:

Part 4, Business Management Skills is a 2 hour and 45 minute examination consisting of 100 multiple choice questions covering the following topics:

Other Institute of Internal Auditors’ specialty examinations such as the Certified in Control Self Assessment, Certified Government Audit Professional or Certified Financial Services Auditor may be substituted in lieu of completing Part 4. If all four parts are passed, the first three of the CIA examination and a specialty examination, a candidate will have two certifications. It is possible to pass six parts and obtain four certifications in this manner.
